A recounting of my experiences riding the stages of Pedal Pittsburgh
2021. Stage 3 from Frostburg to Deep Creek Lake was the most enjoyable
stage for me.

Pedal Pittsburgh Stage Three: July 7, 2021
I spoke with Drew the night before, and he agreed to begin our
ride at 0700. He was very kind in riding the whole stage with me.
We had enough of an early start that we were able to complete the
stage without being caught by other riders.
This ride satisfied my idyllic dream of being in a breakaway from
the peloton and not getting caught before the finish.
The first climb out of Frostburg was of Mt Savage. We went up at
an easy pace. I remember that the climb ended in a "twin" peak
that had many antenna towers.
It was early enough in the morning that that there was still a
cool misty layer at the upper altitude.
The next 13 miles were on rolling terrain. At mile 15 we began
a segment along New Germany State Park area next to the
Savage River on Lower New Germany Rd.
This road is to the SE of the New Germany X country
ski area where I have X country skiied many times.
We then Turned left onto Westernport Rd to begin a descent
at 14.6 miles in the ride.
An exhilerating 4 mile descent thru wooded was very
enjoyable and finished across a bridge where Drew waited
for me. We then turned right onto Savage River Rd.
Along this road I drafted off of Drew and the Van passed us
at 19.9 miles.
We stopped at rest stop area with the Van and used the
rest rooms. We began riding again and carefully rode
across the gravel in a constructiona area. at mile 24.
Next we biked a segment with Savage River Reservoir on the
left and then turned right onto Dry Run Rd to
Begin the climb out of the Savage River valley
at 26.3 miles. It was a tough 4 mile climb with plenty of
switchbacks. We then navigated the rest of the way
to Deep Creek Lake. At 33.7 mi. we Turned right onto
Tooth Pick Rd and descended to shore of Deep creek Lake.

Side note on Savageman Tri Bike course:
This is a 55 mile loop with 5,500 ft of climbing
that begins and ends in Deep Creek lake. It climbs up
Tooth Pick Rd and goes along the Savage river valley
to Westernport and goes up the "Westernport
wall" then loops North, goes thru New Germany State Park
and finishes back at the lake.
---------------------------------------------------------
We finished at our destination, the
LakeStar Motel along the shore of Deep Creek Lake
at 1151. Laura was the first rider to finish after us.
We had to wait until the rooms were ready. I requested
a floor level room because I did not want to climb the stairs.
I showered, changed and started walking towards a nearby
Lido's Pizza and was fortunate in getting a ride there
from a man who was leaving the boat rental store nearby.
The Lido store was closed, but then he dropped me off at
another pizza store across a busy highway next to an arcade.
I ordered my pizza and waited and talked to Bill and Laura.
I went back in the van with Ted and we stopped a Beer store
and bought ice and a six pack of Fat Tire Beer.
I went back, ate some of the pizza, had 2 beers and watched
the second Euro Semi-Final where England beat Denmark
on penalties.
